Environmental Justice

CEEJ was awarded the Environmental Justice  Achievement Award for its activities to address environmental justice concerns in Mississippi's Turkey Creek Basin.

CEEJ has conducted forums to educate the community on environmental justice issues associated with environmental cleanups, and is working to ensure that regulatory agencies comply with EPA and state requirements. 

CEEJ  has also helped to organize training programs for affected residents on lead detection and abatement, brownfields assessment and remediation, and emergency preparedness and response.

  • Successfully conducted health surveys investigating lead poisoning and dioxin spill;
  • Successfully advocated for community involvement and positions on the Department of Defense Restoration Advisory Board at Keesler Air Force Base (AFB), MS and the Naval Construction Battalion Center, Gulfport, MS;
  • Successfully advocated for community involvement and positions on the Department of Defense Restoration Advisory Board at Keesler Air Force Base (AFB), MS and the Naval Construction Battalion Center, Gulfport, MS;
  • Organized and trained youth and adult EJ workers.  Both have functioned in Trainers Training Trainers workshops, lead detection workshops, and have trained with Dr. Kwaza, Chemical Engineer, on lead poisoning in and around homes.
  • Organized Senior Citizen groups and conducted training that addressed migration of toxins from contaminated soils and water from the Naval Base (Naval Construction Battalion Center, Gulfport, MS) to Afro-American communities.
